All members should make their introduction here, so I'll start...
My name is Yuji, for those of you that don't know me, I'm a computer 'geek' not 'nerd'. (There is a difference). I've live in San Diego, the most beautiful city ever, where I spend my days working to pay for school. I'm currently going for my BS in Computer Engineering, which I hope finish in the near......decade or so.
I started this forum in January 2004 in hopes that I can make a contribution to the Tenrikyo church by setting up a powerful tool for everyone to use to communicate ideas, questions, suggestions, and just a means to talk everyday stuff with their pals. The original forum didn't get updated much, at all, and I just didn't have the time to get it kicked off right. Now that I'm on summer break with extra time on my hands, I'm putting my spare time into this website and I hope everyone can make use of this forum. Please don't be afraid to share your ideas with me or the rest of the forum. Thanks for joining the community.

Hi! My name is Hiroko. I live in Hollywood.
I originally started making a simple web page to try to promote Tenrikyo in 2002.
http://www.geocities.com/hiroko01302001/index.html
I didnft get to update that site much.
Then, in November 2004, I started my blog to try to create more interaction.
http://tenrikyo.blogspot.com/
I really believe that it's important to discuss our faith in order to really be able to grasp it for oneself.
For some reason, people would tell me, I saw your blog, but wouldn't actually respond in the blog. I'm still trying to get people to communicate, but mostly use it to disseminate information.
I love doing this kind of stuff and would do it all day, but alas, I have a day job (taking care of the church as the wife of a minister) and two little kids (3-year-old and 10-month-old boys), so I donft get to update info as much as I would like.
I was really thrilled to see this Forum and hope to be able to actively participate in it. Thanks for putting this together! Great job!!

I got here through xanga, the Tenrikyo for dummies blogring. After looking at one blog I press the link and got to this forum. Basically at xanga there was not much about Tenrikyo discussed. Having taken a "vacation" from Tenrikyo for about 15 years maybe there have been some changes since I'v e been gone?
Looks like some Tenrikyo traits are present, drinking, smoking and having babies but we'll see if there can be more to Tenrikyo than meets the eye.
My ex-wife brought me to Tenrikyo and it seems like my daughters have not been too active in Tenrikyo. Right now I am going to check out the rest of the forum befor e saying anything more. _________________ hinokishin without a thought

This Grant from Seattle, for all those who went to the forum in July that's sensei to you hahaha.
I've with Tenrikyo for 6 years, but it wasn't until I saw the grandness of the Jiba that I decided to make more of an effort to bring more people in and to study more about the teachings.
I feel strongly towrds the relationship between Oyasama Oyagamisama Mitamasama and myself.
That's just a small amount of who I am.
So as a challenge to all who read this, and the forum people already know, Please try wearing your Hapi once a month everywhere for a day. Break out of your shells and meet new people so that we may spread the teachings to everyone.

I guess Ive been away too long never heard of that word. I also wonder about the use of the names of the fish instuments Isonami, igonami or some sort of names... I notice that the Wiki article has no mention of the names.
Any way Grr seatac sensei are you otherwise known on xanga too? Anyway thanks for the introduction, clap, clap, clap _________________ hinokishin without a thought

Hi Kashif,
I'd perused through the TUK website a while back and emailed Rev. Matsui about it (with compliments) and this forum site. He said he'd introduce it to members in the UK. It's a pleasure to see you here!

I finally got the nerve to post! I signed up last week maybe but I didn't see this section until today. I found out about it from Mr. Yuji Hamada himself at the Forum this summer 169. It's good to see the diversity of all the members. But here is my jiko shokai (self introduction):
I am Roy Tetsuo Forbes, originally from Honolulu, not as special as San Diego or Vancouver unfortunately, but it was home for most of my life. I have spent some time in New York (albiet five months) but I am probably in Jiba for the long haul. I was NEET for a while (not in education, employment, or training) but I now work for Honbu, the Overseas Department, Translation Section. I would like to use the Forum here to get a feel for what kinds of changes in terminology are needed to have people who aren't fluent in Japanese to understand the Teaching better (but know that we are stuck with some terminology for the time being)
I remember taking up Grant's challenge to wear a happi all day once a month but it doesn't add to much here! I guess I need to get out more. |

There is a tremendous need to translate Japanese into English. At Dendocho they had some translating teams working in the '80s and it was interesting.
I don't know how long you have been in Tenrikyo and so I am reluctant to ask you questions. Instead I hope you keep coresponding to this forum, feel free to expres ideas and thoughts here. _________________ hinokishin without a thought

Maybe I should include a little more of my background in Tenrikyo. I am a third-generation follower, so I more or less grew up in the faith with my mother's influence, but I wasn't very knowledgable of what Tenrikyo was about until I entered Shuyoka exactly seven years ago. I never went to the Oyasato Seminar, unlike other followers of my generation. But I went to Shuyoka after graduating from college, just when I needed some direction in my life. I did hinokishin about a year at the Overseas Department, North America-Oceania Section (old name America I). I then entered the first half of the head ministers qualification course (koshu zenki) before returning to Hawaii. I was Hawaii Dendocho as a live in seinen for ten months. I then went back to college, the UH Religion Department and I studied Tenrikyo for my MA thesis. I finished the head ministers course (koki) last year, where I met my wife and spent Jan to May this year at Tenrikyo New York Center as a temporary live-in seinen. Tenrikyo is an indispensible part of my life especially that I am married now and my wife expecting. I wouldn't know where I'll be without it. I probably wouldn't have been born in the first place, but that's a story I'll save for later. _________________ "It is of utmost importance to have a mind that does not allow things to go to waste or to spoil. Thanks, Lewis. Don't worry if you didn't know, it was fairly recent and low-key. We just filed the papers, we will have the ceremony next year after the baby is born. I also am based in Southern California. I went to Jiba and haven't done much with Tenrikyo.
However I am very good at internet search and not too lazy to blog. However we do need feedback here and try to meet the needs of others and not just ourselves.
Hopefully your excitement will translate into more articles and things of interest to the Tenrikyo community. Some of the visitors have tried their hand at writing in the Wikipedia article on Tenrikyo.
Another portion was devoted to Korean Tenrikyo. Hopefully someone will write more on the Southern California Tenrikyo movement. _________________ hinokishin without a thought

Welcome to the club, Diane! I've already seen a few of your posts, and it is always a pleasure to see new people contributing to the ongoing discussions we are having here, especially after the fact that we were interrupted by an unrelenting stream of spammers who apparently were only interested in advancing their dust-inspired agenda. Hope to see more of your posts! _________________ "It is of utmost importance to have a mind that does not allow things to go to waste or to spoil. Hi! My name is Gary, I go to Michigan State in East Lansing, Michigan... my permanent home used to be in Chicago, but my family moved to London, England just a few months ago.
Now I live in both places! I also still visit Chicago every once and a while...
As far as Tenrikyo is concerned, I don't really have any experience in it during this life (although I wouldn't be surprised if I did in my last one). Right now, I'm suffering from the top-heavy mindset that is brought about by having access to a huge library, but no church -- I have a good deal of knowledge about Tenrikyo in my head, but very little "personal experience". |

Welcome to Tenrikyo Forum, Gergory! Hope to see more of your posts in the future.
Certainly, the name "Oyasato Seminar" is kind of misleading. People who know nothing about it would assume it would be a morning or afternoon lecture or something of the sort. But they've been using for 20+ years, so go figure.
I guess it would be best described as an annual summer course for youths of high-school seniors/college freshmen-age to become Yoboku, or recepients of the Sazuke. A lot of classes on the teachings, Hand Dance, practical sessions engaging in nioigake (door-to-door missionary work) among many other activities. Here is a link to an article about last year's Seminar:

Hello from Ukraine. I'm Serge, live in Dnepropetrovsk city. Glad to be a member of forum and to know more about Tenrikyo. Pity, we haven't any Tenri group here but thanks to Internet this problem is not so serious.
Best wishes to all! |

It has almost been a month but sorry for the late welcome. So where did you hear about Tenrikyo? I checked the google search and the last note on tenrikyo news was that the Judo team from Tenri visited France.
Maybe you heard that Tenri is a great place for Judo?
I really haven't heard much about the work of Tenrikyo in Europe besides the center in France and England.
Well if Ukraine needs some rain, maybe Tenrikyo could send a missionary to help ask for rain? Nonetheless Tenrikyo Missionaries are helpful in both medical and spiritual healing.... _________________ hinokishin without a thought
